Dedicated customer substation
Built primarily to serve a single large customer or campus.
The electrical infrastructure that connects large loads or generators to the transmission and distribution system.
Large projects may require dedicated substations, transformers, switchgear, transmission lines, protection systems, and utility upgrades. A statement that power is “available” does not by itself establish that a project can be served at the requested load, schedule, voltage, redundancy level, or cost.
Impacts depend on scale, design, operating mode, maintenance, location, and the other systems this technology connects to.
The same general system can produce different tradeoffs depending on which configuration is actually proposed.
Built primarily to serve a single large customer or campus.
Strengthens or expands shared utility infrastructure.
Connects onsite or independent generation to the grid.
Multiple transmission or distribution paths used for high-reliability service.
Large capital cost and disputes over who pays
New transmission corridors or substation land use
Transformer and equipment noise
Schedule risk if utility upgrades lag project construction
Stranded infrastructure if projected load does not materialize
